FAQs

How do I choose the right class level?

Yoga is beneficial for everyone, regardless of whether this is your first time or you’ve been practicing for years. Below are the descriptions of the various class levels offered in my Classes & Workshops.

Chair Yoga - If you are a beginner, senior, or recovering from an injury, chair yoga is appropriate for you. You will begin seated, and then stand with the help of a chair if needed. Then you will build upon the foundations of grounding your feet, strengthening your legs, to improve posture, balance, and stability.

Gentle - This level is the perfect fit between Chair Yoga and Beginner. These classes are designed to move at a slower pace. You will use chairs, blocks, the wall or whatever props are needed to learn the foundations of grounding your feet, strengthening your legs, to improve posture, balance, and stability.

Beginner - If you are brand new to yoga, or returning to yoga after some time away, this is the place for you. You will learn the foundations of grounding your feet and strengthening your legs. You will gain mobility in your trunk and arms by learning standing poses, forward bends, and twists.

Intermediate - This level is appropriate if you have completed at least one session or 6 months of Beginner level yoga. You will learn standing poses, forward bends, back bends, twists, and inversions.

What should I bring and wear for a yoga class?

First, bring an open mind and a light spirit. If you have your own yoga mat, blocks or belt bring them. If not, most places will supply a mat and all other props. Please wear loose fitting, comfortable clothes and if possible clothing that allows the teacher to see your feet, ankles, knees and legs.

What if I have an injury or limitation?

Please inform the teacher of any injuries or limitations you have which may hinder your movement or cause you pain during class. This is for your benefit and will help the teacher modify the poses to fit your needs.

Can I show up late?

Class begins and ends promptly at the time designated on the schedule. It is understood that occasionally events prevent one from being on time. Promptness is for you safety and benefit, as well as that of your fellow students.

What is Iyengar Yoga?

B.K.S. Iyengar is the founder and namesake of Iyengar Yoga. This system of yoga is heavily based on precise alignment of the body, efficiency of movement and integration of body awareness and concentration. These attributes are taught through postures (asanas). As the student builds strength, learns balance and gains flexibility, a feeling of well-being and quietness comes to the practitioner. Iyengar Yoga is often referred to as "Meditation In Action."

The use of props - chairs, blankets, blocks and the wall are used to help give each student the full experience and sensation of a posture (asana). Generally speaking, props are the reason every body, regardless of age, flexibility and ability can practice yoga. Learn more about Iyengar Yoga.

What are some benefits of doing yoga?

Yoga is incredible for our body both physically and mentally. It’s wonderful for reducing stress, increasing flexibility, reducing pain - especially back pain, improvement in sleep quality, and many more.
